A writer and a famous retired pediatric surgeon, Bernie Siegel wrote that we must embrace each challenge in life as an opportunity for Self-Transformation. We often hear the phrase “Attitude is Everything”. As true as that stands to be a classic statement and principle, it is also necessary to understand what is the “right” attitude and how transforming it in a positive way can show good results in life, especially in a workplace. Placing Self-Transformation before Workplace Transformation is essential not only to create a better work environment but also it is proven to benefit the individuals who practice the key principles of success. This can go a long way in helping individuals to address and overcome challenges faced in a professional or organizational setup.

So, what indeed, is Self-Transformation?

Self-Transformation here, refers to the process of equipping oneself with essential, personal and relational skills, to create a more open environment in an organization and maintain a positive attitude.

There’s one thing about beings professional…and it’s a totally different thing to be “profession ready”. Self-Transformation makes one profession-ready and brings immense personal satisfaction too. One cannot make a positive and relevant impact at work without practicing certain principles/habits themselves. Interventions such as coaching, management training and mentoring create platforms for and facilitate the process of Self-Transformation of employees, which in turn promotes a positive, mutually helpful work environment and creates healthier peer-to-peer as well as manager-team member relationships. Self-Transformation not only benefits an individual but creates a positive impact on people that the individual maintains interactions with. Along with that, it also boosts a person’s inter-personal skills and helps develop the necessary abilities/virtues such as tolerance, diplomacy, patience and dedication

Here are three reasons as to why Self-Transformation comes before Workplace Transformation.

  1. Facilitates Positive Attitude in an Individual.

It stands as true as Time itself we say that the right attitude is the key to tackling any situation. Although a cliché, quite a few situations and outcomes are seldom under our control but how we look at it, is what distinguishes a truly successful person from a seeker of success. Many a times, in an organizational setup, there is a certain element of risk, chance of incurring losses and derailing of processes. Situations can become uncertain and unpredictable. Flaws, conflicts and competition exist as part of an organization. Self-Transformation, through sustained interventions, helps equip a person with the skills to deal with these challenges, maintain equanimity, and an enthusiastic attitude at work, even during difficult phases.

2. Helps prepare people to undertake greater responsibilities with a better responses

People with a better sense of enthusiasm and a zest for life generally tend to deliver better outputs. Exuberance of nature that radiates from a person without self-limiting beliefs and false sense of the self, can be contagious and has the power to attract further positivity. Such people generally tend to attract better dividends in the long run and one of them is being entrusted with greater responsibilities and higher roles. It is important to note that being patient and diligent are both important and proven to be the traits of a self-transformed person.

3. Creates an environment for healthy interaction and a good team spirit.

In order for the process of self-transformation to work, the individual needs to chart our ways to improve himself not just professionally but also personally. An integrated coaching intervention can help a person as well as the organization, in identifying strengths and areas of improvement. By this kind of approach, it is possible to create a healthy interactive environment to share ideas and matters of concern – without inhibitions or skepticism. It helps create a platform for fruitive discussion, fostering good team spirit, which is a fundamental requirement of every productive organisation.
