Source | www.forbes.com | Kevin G. Armstrong

A few of you reading this may know what I mean by that, but most won’t.

Mostly, there is mass confusion over the meaning of the words ‘leader’ and ‘manager.’ That is because the best authors who write about it, the famous speakers who speak on it, and the best business schools that teach it are confused to say the least.

This confusion results in leaders functioning as managers, which conflicts with their inherent tendencies and destroys their value, and as a result, their organizations.

This happens over and over in sports. A great player, once-in-a-generation talent, leader of a championship team decides it’s time to retire from the game and take on a coaching or managerial role. How often does that story have a happy ending?

  1. Give clear directions.
  2. Inspire others into action.
  3. Connect with people.
  4. Are good at resolving conflict.
  5. Have people who want to work for them.

The list goes on, but for brevity let’s just deal with these five that, actually, are not the characteristics of a leader.
