The Case for a Routine- in the Post COVID World

2020- we spoke about managing anxiety, going inwards, and taking a dip into our inner world. We rose to help, realized to recognize, and acted to make a difference. Kudos to us!

2021- as we wait for the vaccine to take effect, for offices to open, and life to return to normalcy (as per our definition), we have one golden opportunity to recollect what has worked for us in 2020.

Time to set in stone those new-found habits and make them into a routine.

Why routine? Aren’t we all sick of it?

Not entirely true. Think deeply. We are sick of a lack of routine. We’re not running out of the home that much and rushing back to get dinner on the table and struggle with homework. For a lot of us, our days have been filled with working, worrying, wondering what the future holds, and walking one step each day towards perceived certainty (i.e., vaccine)

What does a routine mean? I have been washing dishes for eternity!

Routine means having a combination of activities that include both cerebral and transactional aspects. It is part of both our conscious and unconscious actions. Stuff that we do because we have to do it and that we want to do as well. But the key here is repetition and discipline.

What will a routine exactly do? Especially now?

Routine gives us a sense of much-needed autonomy. Autonomy means having the freedom to choose and to control our choices. Human beings, by their very nature, need a pattern to swing into action. A way that suggests that something is safe and will be successful if we take it on. Routine gives us that very feeling. How?

Routine is something we do every day, day after day, with tremendous success and lesser effort (count out managing children here!). Think about how you feel when you manage your drive through a crazy street, and it gives you a sense of success- due to it being part of your routine. And thus gives you greater control over both your sanity and your car. It’s so ingrained that we’ve stopped thinking about it (except crib about the traffic!)
