Sharing knowledge has helped mankind survive and evolve into the intelligent and productive species he is today. In the animal kingdom and indeed in business, knowledge sharing can make the difference between survival and extinction.
Peter Drucker said that “Knowledge has to be improved, challenged, and increased constantly, or it vanishes”
Knowledge is like money: to be of value it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and, hopefully, in value. A candle burns itself to give light to others. A knife is sharpened by rubbing against another knife. If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it. By giving people the power to share, we’re empowering people around the world. It is good to rub, and polish our brain against that of others.
Colonization of Knowledge
However in todays world, many believe that Knowledge is Power and tend to hoard it and control the dissemination of knowledge. From a commercial angle “Content is King”. Authors, organisations, publishing houses and others go out of the way to protect their Knowledge & Content in the form of Intellectual Capital (IP), Copywright, plagiarism etc.
Very few believe that “Sharing Knowledge is Power”.
In today’s environment, hoarding knowledge ultimately erodes your power. If you know something very important, the way to get power is by actually sharing.
We are living in a changing world. We are in the era of the ‘Information Revolution’. For the first time in history people around the globe have access to information from around the world, thanks to the World Wide Web & Internet.
In many ways, developments in information and communication technology (ICT) and open access have disrupted knowledge sharing and global information flows. The evolution of ICT and the internet in particular has vastly increased the distance and speed at which information can travel. Through the internet, the public has the ability to participate in the global accumulation of knowledge.
The open-access movement, as articulated in the 2002 Budapest Open Access Initiative declaration, is characterized by lofty ideals that seek to enact this democratizing effect in the scholarly realm. The declaration states:
“Removing access barriers to this literature will accelerate research, enrich education, share the learning of the rich with the poor and the poor with the rich, make this literature as useful as it can be, and lay the foundation for uniting humanity in a common intellectual conversation and quest for knowledge.”
In subverting the now typical commodification of knowledge and information, open access is posited as a way to bring equity to information consumption and to advance knowledge and development.
It is precisely what the mission of www.humanengineers.com is. We are helping to build a repository of information, knowledge, experiences aggregated from around the best in the world. We are reaching out to Business & HR thought leaders and asking them to share their work, papers, articles and experiences with us.
We have had mixed success so far.
However there is one person who welcomed our initiative with open arms.
Dr. Marshall Goldsmith. He is a world-renowned business educator and coach, Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is the leading expert in his field. His singular ability to get results for top leaders has drawn over 150 CEO’s and their management teams to address change in the workplace. They want what Dr. Goldsmith offers: practical and proven methods.
He is a living example of Democratization of Knowledge and Sharing of Knowledge for the benefit of helping others to succeed.
I’ve filled my website with free articles, columns, interviews, webcasts, podcasts, audios, and videos. Please read, listen to, watch, download, copy, and send these materials to anyone in your company you think might benefit.
Even better, please share with your favorite charity, spiritual, or non-profit organization.
If you or anyone you know finds value in these resources, it will make me feel great!
Life is good.
How many websites, thought Leaders, Authors have such message on their website ?
Each article, blog, paper, interviews, tools & videos are priceless. He could have made tons of money by charging a fee but chose to share it for free. He strongly believes that Knowledge is like money: to be of value it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and, hopefully, in value. By giving people the power to share, we’re empowering people around the world.
No wonder he is the one of the most Recognized Business & HR Guru’s of modern times:
Joy of Sharing
Joy of Sharing is not just related to sharing of wealth. The Joy of Sharing knowledge is equally satisfying and can be experienced only when we start sharing knowledge.
Wish more and more thought Leaders, Business Leaders, publishing houses and the media follow Dr. Marshall Goldsmith and help in spreading of knowledge & sharing their knowledge, ideas & experiences in our journey of
“Co-creating value through People”.
