India’s best workplaces of 2016: Designations don’t define people at Intuit India

Many parents will tell you that they struggle with balancing the pressures of a high-performing job alongside the demands of family life, and wish they could spend more time at home with their little ones.

This isn’t the case with Soumi Datta, who has been with Intuit India for six years. “Our work culture is such that my family doesn’t understand my stress, because I don’t carry it back to them. The company allows for a seamless transition between roles at the office and at home. In my time here, I haven’t missed a single school programme or life event of my daughter’s,” says Datta, who is director of engineering – Enterprise Business Solutions.

“In fact, if I micromanage her activities, she tells me to go to work, because she gets enough of me at home!” Rahul Goyal, vice-president of product development, says the organisation gives employees the space and opportunity to grow. “Each one of us wants to do more, to create a larger impact than our job definition. Our designations don’t define us – and Intuit provides a collaborative atmosphere that helps us be our best selves.” Collaboration is not just a buzzword at this software firm.

A fine example of this is the Intuit Leap programme, introduced in September last year, which brought together 23 high-potential performers across different business units, and through action learning, sponsorship and coaching, invested in developing their talent. These employees took on real-life challenges related to retention, commutes, branding, and put their heads together to come up with solutions.

“Intuit Leap is a way for us to groom future leaders, not just next-generational ones but also women. The big difference from last year is that I now have four women directors in my leadership team, when previously I had only one,” says Vijay Anand, senior vice president and managing director. To further drive employee collaboration the company also has a programme called ‘Styles of Influence’.

“Styles of Influence is a framework where people can understand their own styles of working, interact with others and find out what their styles are. The framework teaches them to use their own styles in accordance with others, in order to collaborate towards a high-performing work environment,” says Anand.

The programme covers almost 75% of Intuit’s workforce in India. Collaboration isn’t just internal but also external, with Intuit being instrumental in taking headon the challenges that Bengaluru holds for employees travelling to and from work.
