Kolkata: Corporate chief executives, entrepreneurs and professionals listen to music and some even play musical instruments to unwind and rejuvenate, and say music is a great way to achieve work-life balance in a high-stress-inducing environment.

“I’ve been in corporate life for 30 years. We face a lot of chaos in personal and professional life and listening to music or participating in musical sessions helps one take a pause. In a hospital, we tell employees to serve with a smile. This smile will be genuine only if one is happy from within,” said Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital CEO Rupali Basu. “Stress gives rise to an increase in cortisol, a hormone that activates the sympathetic nervous system and has a lot of damaging effects. It helps to deal with difficult situations but if it is high at all times, it has a lot of damaging effects. Music, on the other hand, helps reduce cortisol and increase the release of the happy hormone endorphin,” explained IVF specialist Indrani Lodh.
