#PeopleLedByPurpose

Smiles, I believe, are powerful. Not only do we mimic the motion, but we also imbibe the energy. But I met a person who defined it as their very Purpose. As simple as it sounds, it is an incredible story.

So, here I introduce to you, Sukhi. Many of you may know Sreesukhi Sudarshan as she has been a prolific recruiter and a Talent advocate with many big brands. We have worked together for three years – to take on some very daunting business challenges. In all this time, I have rarely seen her frazzled, but never have I seen her not smile. Not in the face of escalations, when you are troubleshooting, even towards the end of a long day, nor in the face of daunting targets, and certainly not as she juggled professional and personal commitments amidst the pandemic.

Curious, as I am, I asked her the secret behind two things she seemed to have an inexhaustible supply of – smile and energy. The answer to my question was a compelling purpose narrative.

She told me, half in jest, that her mother named her Sukhi, which means the one who brings happiness, and she simply strives to live up to her name. But, putting aside Shakespeare, there is certainly more than what is in the name in her case. To spread happiness, she defined, was her Purpose.

Well, I had the same question that many of you may have. Can an emotion be one’s Purpose?

  • Purpose guides not just your decisions; it influences your action. In Sukhi’s case, she opted to be a recruiter because helping people find what they want motivates her. Over a period, she spent more time helping people discover what they truly wanted and added career counseling elements as against just a job hunt. She has worked on many projects to craft careers into modules that assimilate people at various stages – it could be about getting people back after career breaks, bringing in diversity in hiring, skilling to rural areas, etc. She has worked with children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to help them pursue careers and their dreams.
  • Purpose is not a formula. I have often said my Purpose is evolving. First, I found a job that became a career, and today it is my calling. In Sukhi’s case, it was the other way around. She said her Purpose was always clear. She built everything around it. While she trained as a technologist, she spent over a year trying new things – till she discovered recruitment. And she decided to take a plunge with almost no background on the subject. So, find your purpose your own way.
  • Purpose should energize. This sounds almost mystical, but you know you are on the right track when you wake up with ”what more can you do?” rather than a list of to-dos.

Again, it is natural to be envious when you run into people who seem to have such a charted path. It is rare. But what I do recommend, if you are on a journey to discover your calling is – to draw your energy and inspiration from #peopleledbypurpose.

Even as I write this story, Sukhi continues to explore new ways to reach out to people as both a recruiter and a happiness and mindfulness coach. She is working extensively with the next generation and coaching them on finding their purpose and passion. So, as I conclude, I wish her luck in her mission to make the world a better place, one smile at a time.
