If you chose to remain a beggar , the Goddess of wealth will give you a few coins as people do to the beggars. That is not your goal. Your objective in worshipping Lakshmi is to be wealthy and prosperous. The way to achieve this is seek from Her higher values of life. The rest will follow.
Remember Lakshmi is always shown sitting on lotus. This is very symbolic for the Lakshmi worshippers. Lotus lives in water but does not get wet by it. The Goddess expects Her devotees to live in the world, enjoy its wealth but not become obsessed with it. If you can do that, She will always remain pleased with you.
The Goddess Lakshmi is always shown wearing red clothes or Sari. Red symbolises activity. This conveys to Her worshippers that She does not like a lazy person. She expects us to perform our duties honestly and sincerely in order to please Her.
An owl is also shown sitting next to gold coins pouring from Goddess Lakshmi’s hands. An owl is a night bird that dwells in darkness and cannot see in daytime. This signifies that Her devotees must not be blinded by material wealth and dwell in the darkness of ignorance because the passion for possessiveness leads to sufferings.
