On 5th July, a bill was proposed as an amendment in the Child Development Co-Savings Act by the Ministry of Social and Family Development. The changes made by this bill will allow parents who are ineligible for maternity/paternity leave or adoption leave due to certain employment arrangements, to get a cash benefit.

The cash benefits will go up to $30,000 which will be calculated based on the employees’ income. These cash benefits will help parents take leave without having to think about income, and focus on their child’s wellbeing.

Employees sometimes don’t qualify for maternity or paternity leave and benefits due to short-term contracts, and expiration of contracts before the birth or adoption of a child, and so on. These cash benefits will be sourced from the government-paid share of leave.

Under the new law, natural or adoptive fathers will get cash benefits of up to two weeks the remuneration of which will be capped at $2,500 every week including the Central Provident Fund contributions. Natural or adoptive mothers will receive cash benefits for eight to twelve weeks in their maternity leave, with cash benefits up to $30,000, depending on their average income.
