Companies That Will Help Finance Your Education

By | Lily Crager
With today’s sky-high tuition costs, a tuition-free education may seem to some like seeing a
unicorn on an afternoon stroll– it just doesn’t exist. However, tuition-free education might not be
as rare as you think, it’s actually feasible and it can be done with the help of your employer. No
unicorns, this very real benefit is called tuition reimbursement.

Now, before we jump into what tuition reimbursement is, it’s important to clarify what tuition-free
is. This doesn’t mean that your education comes without a price tag, instead it means that you
don’t pay the fee. There is an assortment of options when it comes to financial assistance
including applying for a scholarship or fellowship or receiving financial aid.

One of these options is tuition reimbursement. As a benefit, tuition reimbursement is offered
through your company who will agree to help you pay for your education if certain criteria is met.
Usually this criteria involves working for the company for a specific amount of time, what degree
you’re looking to pursue and whether or not you’re looking to return to the company after you
complete your degree.

Whatever field you’re in, there is bound to be an employer who offers a generous tuition
assistance program. Some consulting firms like Deloitte and Boston Consulting Group will pay
fully for your education provided that you’ve worked for the company for some time and that
you’re going to return after graduation. But even if you aren’t in one of those cut-throat
consulting firms, you can still get ample aid to fuel your educational ambitions. McDonald’s, for
example, offers up to $2,500 a year in tuition reimbursement for employees working a minimum
of 15 hours per week.

Not only does the money help you, but it’s also in the best interest of companies to help finance
your education. According to the Lumina Foundation, education reimbursement programs have
a 129% return on investment, which means for every dollar the company invests, it generates
an additional $1.29.

So, if you’re on the job search or if you’re working at one of these companies that offer tuition
reimbursement, make sure to bring it up with your HR department so you can advance your
education. And even if your company doesn’t offer tuition reimbursement, this guide walks
through how to have a financial conversation with your employer to help you fund your
education.

Yes, the price of higher education is an enormous one. But if you’re ambitious enough, you can
find unique ways to get that degree as tuition reimbursement is just one of them!
